07- July 2024 - Show & Tell

We all love to see what WGNC members are making and there is no better way to do so than by participating in a Show & Tell session.

Show & Tell sessions are intended for all levels of woodturners and designed to be a safe and respectful place to solicit supportive input and advice, regardless of a woodturners experience level. It’s an opportunity for turners to engage in an informal and beneficial exchange of ideas and to foster growth in woodturning.

All WGNC members and their guests are welcome to spend an evening with fellow woodturners as we explore and share members' projects, ideas, issues and yes, even those shop disasters.

Keep in mind, you do not have to have a completed project to participate.  These sessions are designed for the exploration of ideas, techniques, problems, designs and any other subjects pertaining to your woodturning experience.  So, whether you have a completed piece, a practice piece or simply "story boards", all are welcome for sharing and discussing with other members.

One of WGNC's missions is to encourage all woodturners, regardless of skill level, to participate in our Show & Tell sessions.  The sessions are all about our members adventures in turning.  What they turned, what they learned, how they addressed problems and challenges, design considerations and modifications.  They are also about learning and sharing, mentoring, and experiencing the many avenues of woodturning.  As a Guild, we offer many opportunities, but none as important as sharing our collective knowledge of all things turning.  Show & Tell  sessions are simply another way for you to bring more skills and exposure to your personal turning experience, give and receive help and guidance as needed and enjoy the adventures of your fellow woodturners.

To help accomplish the above, WGNC has recently reviewed and updated the Show & Tell Guidelines.  We ask that each of you take a moment to read these updated Session and Submission Guidelines.  Doing so will make each session more enjoyable for all members and help in the organizing and the presentation of each session.

Session Guidelines: following these guidelines really helps to promote participation

We want people, especially emerging turners, to bring whatever they are working on and share their learnings, and we provide supportive comments.  If asked for input of improvements by the turner, we provide constructive feedback, but not comments that are unsupportive of the effort.

  • What we want to hear from the turner:
    • What you like about the piece, what you learned and what would you do different the next time.
    • Please limit your time  to 3-4 mins so that everyone has an equal chance to speak about their piece
  • What we want to hear from the participants:
    • What you like about the piece, make it short and to the point so others can also speak
    • Maintain a positive attitude in your comments
    • Only provide recommendations for improvements when asked for by the turner
    • Providing comments on what you do not like is not helpful or supportive for the turner

Submission Guidelines: following these guidelines really helps us to organize the Gallery

  • Each person can submit up to two items per session.
  • Include one or two main photos of each piece (front profile, top/bottom), you can include inset photos within one of the main photos, but please limit these.
  • Include your name in your photo file name (e.g. “J Doe Spalted Bowl 1.jpg”)
  • Include a description with these details:
    - Include your name, name/type of piece, wood species, dimensions, type of finish, and a short (one or two
      sentence) description with any challenges.
    - Format Sample:
John Doe – Shallow bowl made of spalted maple, 12” x 3” in size, and has a Tung Oil finish. The wood was
punky on the bottom, so I had to turn it off and make a shallow bowl. I included some embellishments on
the rim that match the spalting.
  • Email your submissions to Woodturnersguildnc@gmail.com
  • All submissions are due by 6 PM the Wednesday before the S&T session.
