Tips, Tricks and Jigs & WGNC Holiday Social 2023

  • Thursday December 14th
  • NC State Crafts Center
  • (There will be no Zoom for this event)
  • Craft Center opens at 6:30 PM
  • Event begins at 7 PM

What better way to wrap up 2023 than to get together with fellow turners for some Guild provided Holiday snacks and drinks and then pull back the curtain to reveal members favorite “Tips, Tricks and Jigs”.  That's right, bring your favorite T,T, & J to share with the group. We will have tables setup for display and you will have the opportunity to explain, one on one, to your fellow members, no need to get up in front of the audience.  Is your jig to big. or do you need a different way to explain your tip or trick?  No problem, just send us a photo ahead of the meeting and we will display the photo to the people in the room.  See the instructions below.

And, to make this last event of the year even more fun, WGNC will give away three $50 gift certificates for wood!  Prizes will be awarded for the most creative, the best executed and the jiggiest. So, get started now and get ready to bring your best Tip, Trick or Jig with you to the Craft Center.

In addition, there will be an ornament gift exchange.  Bring something you created, place it in a gift bag and then when you arrive at the meeting, place it on the gift exchange table.  Then, during the meeting, we will arrange a time to have the exchange with other turners.

How does Tips, Tricks and Jigs work?  It's easy!  All you need to do is bring your Tip, Trick or Jig to the Craft Center or submit a photo or two of the Tip, Trick or Jig you want to share.  Then, during the evening your item will be shared with all to see and you will be given an opportunity to explain your Tip, Trick or Jig and answer any questions other members might have.

So, got a Tip that has made something in the shop better, show it and share it!  Got a Trick that allows you to get that special effect or shape, show it and share it.  Got a Jig that you can't live without, show it and share it.

Tips, Tricks and Jigs Submission guidelines:

General Guidelines:

  • Participants can only win in one category
  • Participants are limited to two entries for presentation.
  • Plan on each presentation being no longer that 1 - 2 minutes (to be guided by the number of entries).  Be prepared and concise in your presentation.
  • Judge's decisions on prize awards are final.
Photo Guidelines:
  • For photo entries, Email your submissions to Woodturnersguildnc@gmail.com .
  • The deadline for photo submissions is 6:00 PM on Wednesday December 13th.  Due to processing time, we cannot accept entries received after this time.
  • Include no more than four photos of each entry (front/back, top/bottom, any orientation that will help you explain your entry).
  • Include your name and a short (one or two sentence) description of the item being submitted.
  • Send a separate email for each item submitted.
  • Reduce your photo file size before sending – try to keep files to 1Mb or less.  Not sure how to resize or crop your photos?  This 3-minute guide can help if you use Windows.
  • Include your name in your photo file name.

Some Photo Tips:

  • Use a booth/backdrop if you have one or use a solid color wall.
  • Find good lighting, preferably from one source. Don't rely on camera flash.
  • If it's a finished piece, we suggest your best "gallery" shot and another of the bottom or profile/detail not shown in the main shot.
  • If it's a work in progress, closeup shots of problem areas or specific challenges would be appropriate.
  • Crop your photos fairly close to the object alone.
