2023/07/13 - Guild Meeting - Therming with Art Liestman

More Beyond Round - Therming with Art Liestman
  • Thursday July 13th
  • Zoom call opens a 6:15 for socializing
  • Meeting begins at 6:45 PM
  • Demonstration begins at 7 PM

"Therming, is a woodturning technique dating back to the 1700s, that allows the turner to produce multiple-sided spindles with each side turned."  Art's  interest in therming comes, in part, from a curiosity about making objects on the lathe that are not obviously turned. He enjoys exploring realms beyond round.

In this demonstration, Art will show how he approaches turning multiple curved surfaces on wood blanks
to create beautiful turnings that captivate the eye and the imagination.  His process is a variation on multi-axis turning where the axis of rotation does not lie with in the blank being turned.

More details can be found in the American Woodturner article "Beyond Round: Therming" (April 2010) by
clicking here.

The demonstration will explore:

  ●wood selection

  ●jigs

  ●grain alignment

  ●the turning process

●disassembly and reassembly of the pieces

  ●finishing ideas

We hope you will join us for this unique demonstration.
