Looking for a creative way to use those smaller pieces of wood from your shop? WGNC's October meeting will feature Holland Van Gores.

Holland will be demonstrating how to turn a small, 5-inch section of a branch into a hollow form. He'll be using a piece with a pith to show how to work with this common type of wood.

The demonstration will cover the entire process, including how to hollow out the form from the bottom and create a perfect plug to fill the access hole.

After the turning is complete, he'll explore different texturing techniques and finish up with a lesson on mixing and applying milk paint to give your work beautiful and unique finishes.

Get ready to transform those small branches and limb scraps into stunning works of art!

About our Demonstrator:

Holland Van Gores

From an early age Holland has had a need to create or be a maker of things. He notes, "When I create something that moves me from a piece of discarded wood I feel a great satisfaction. I love handmade objects as opposed to mass produced, it helps define us as humans. It’s my way of countering a world that is increasingly choosing quantity over quality, disposable over long life.

The felled wood Holland works with was alive at one time and may have been destined for the fireplace but through his imagination and hands he works to bring life back into it. Holland  says that when a piece of wood is being shaped it takes on a purpose and is slowly re-born before his eyes. He  loves the feel and smell of the wood and can easily get lost in the process.

Holland strives to bring folks attending his demos and workshops into his process hoping they will feel the connection he does and will want to hold their work and take it home with them. That is the one of the main reasons Holland says he creates .
