2025/04/11 or 13 - Finding Your Way to Hollowing Workshop

Workshop - Finding Your Way to Hollowing
lead byTed Ross and Michael Earley

  • Friday April 11th or Sunday April 13th
  • NCSU Crafts Center
  • 9am - 5pm

Have you been thinking about starting to hollow out your vessels but not sure where to start or what tools to use? Or maybe you have been doing some hollowing but would like to expand your capabilities?

Well you’re in luck as this workshop will provide tried and true techniques for hollowing vessels! This workshop will follow Trent Bosch’s demonstration on hollowing and will be reinforcing his techniques.

Our intention is to have participants walk away with a thorough understanding of hollowing and to be comfortable using hollowing tools. We will start out with a piece of wood, turning the outside shape and preparing it for the hollowing process. We will then introduce the use hand held tools for hollowing and show you the process of how to check wall thickness using common tools. Next, we will progress to using Trent’s stabilizer system and then finish by adding his visualizer.

We realize you may not have all these tool sets, so we will use a variety of tools along the way so you can at least get a good start in your own shop afterward. Please bring any hollowing tools you have and we will do our best to get you started with those as well.

This workshop will provide exposure to the following tools:
-Trent Bosch Tools - Stabilizer, Laser and Visualizer
  -David Ellsworth - Hollowing Tools
  -Mike Jackofsky - Hollowing Tools
-Lyle Jamieson Woodturning - Giant Hollowing Sysytem

We hope you will join us for this informative and hands on workshop.

About our Workshop Leaders:

Ted Ross:

I have been interested in working with wood my whole life. My father was a master carpenter so this started my exposure at an early age. My first experience with a wood lathe was in high school where I created as many pieces as time allowed and discovered I loved every minute of it! Today I have my own shop and 3 lathes along with many many tools where I spend much of my time constantly experimenting creating new pieces.

I started out turning mostly bowls but now I seem to wander on a daily basis to all kinds of creative projects on whatever’s been the latest to catch my eye or imagination. I belong to the local North Carolina Woodturners Guild where I have served as the Program Director, Webmaster, Vice-President and am currently the President.

Michael Earley:

As a self-taught woodturner, Michael’s passion for woodworking began in his Junior Highschool woodshop class. His passion for creating with wood progressed into woodturning when he purchased his first lathe in 2017. Since then, he has explored multiple aspects of turning from resin casting, stabilizing, upcycling broken skateboards, hollow forms and most recently basket illusion.
Michael is a WGNC Board Member and is currently Vice President and Program Director.
