Small Projects for the Holidays - Demonstrated by our Members

  • Demonstration begins at 7 PM

At our November meeting of the Woodturners Guild of North Carolina we will continue with our annual Small Projects for the Holidays!


We are very excited to have three of our own members perform these demonstrations and share their talents, processes and techniques. These small projects are easy to make and are great for Holiday gifts!

Bob Edmiston will demo a multi-axis Christmas Tree that can be made from fallen limbs, scraps and other "found" lumber.

The demo will Include selecting wood, tools that can be used, design considerations, mounting and turning techniques.

He will also include some tips and ideas on embellishments, decoration and finishing. 

Preston McQueen
will demo an upscale version of a Hurricane tea or fairy light candle holder. 

This version uses a beverage bottle that has been cut and polished on a lathe.  Then a custom sized base is turned to fit the bottle.

He will demonstrate how to cut the bottle and finish the bottom along with turning techniques for the base including vent holes

Ted Ross will demo how to craft a set of napkin rings from small branches or leftover spindles. 

This will include selection of wood, design of rings, turning and parting techniques. 

It will also include some different ideas for pyrography and carving embellishments.

Bob Edmiston has been turning for over 25 years.  Starting with spindle work, to keep his fiber enthusiast wife supplied with bobbins and spindles, he has expanded his interests and now includes carving, texturing, painting and other explorations in his turnings.  He is a member of the WGNC Board and is currently the Communications Director.  Bob has been a WGNC member for 6 years. Instagram:

Preston McQueen
 has been turning for many years and is a member of the WGNC Board. Preston has been a long time WGNC member.


Ted Ross 
has been tuning for 5 years, is a member of the WGNC Board and is currently the Programs Director and Webmaster. Ted started turning bowls but now seems to wander on a daily basis to all kinds of projects including spindles, multi-axis, winged bowls and platters, boxes, hollow forms and whatever is the latest being demonstrated on WGNC. Ted has turned globally and has happily given away most of his pieces to family and friends. Ted has been a member of WGNC for 5 years.
