Spinning Tops

Do you have a go-to finish for your turned pieces?  Does it work for all your pieces?  Do you wish you could find some new techniques to obtain a finer finish?

While there are some standard go-to finishes that span a wide range of application, the specific finish you choose for any given piece will depend on its desired effect and intended use.

Adopting just a handful of techniques to accommodate the style/s of your work will provide a solid platform for expressing your creative voice!

In this month’s demonstration Eric Lofstrom will equip you with finishing techniques and product information worthy of your resources and creative exploration. This demonstration will provide helpful solutions to the challenges of obtaining the right level of finish for the intended outcome of your piece.

The demonstration will explore the main elements of embellishing and finishing:

  - Wood Preparation
  - Choosing the right finish for your piece
  - Texturing and shadow techniques
  - Abrasives, grits and wet sanding
  - Purpose and use of sanding sealers
  - Homemade finishes
  - When to use waxes

We hope you will join us Thursday evening May 13th for this informative demonstration showing some new and unique techniques.

Eric Lofstrom
Eric Lofstrom: Eric’s earliest memories of creating with wood are in Grandpa's dirt floor, basement workshop; he had a special place at the bench, right next to the scrap bin.

Eric grew up around woodworking, but had never learned about a tool called the lathe until the first weekend in October of 2001, while attending a free demo at a woodworking store.

It was there that a demonstration on turning pens and letter openers changed his woodworking trajectory into woodturning adventures!
Eric’s wife pursued this spark of excitement and set his woodturning journey in motion with a mini lathe and tool set for Christmas. Years later, Eric’s woodturning enthusiasm continues to grow. Today Eric is helping others share in this enthusiasm and provides both IRDs and hands-on workshops.

“There is nothing more powerful than being inspired by an idea and having the courage and confidence to create that one-of-a-kind piece… to me, this is what woodturning is all about!”
