2026/02/12 - Advanced Tool Control with Matt Monaco

Advanced Tool Control with Matt Monaco
  • Thursday February 12th
  • Hybrid: Live at NCSU Crafts Center & on Zoom
  • Zoom call opens a 6:15 for socializing
  • Meeting begins at 6:45 PM
  • Demonstration begins at 7 PM

WGNC is happy to welcome Matt Monaco as our February Demonstrator and, following his demonstration on Thursday evening, Matt will be leading a three day workshop on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

At the center of Matt’s work is his understanding the importance of pursuing fine form, finesse, advanced tool control, sharpening, and cutting execution as a reflection of traditionally crafted design. He produces surfaces made to be as tactile as they are sublime and creates forms with intent and purpose.

Matt's focus during his demonstration and workshops will be an integrated package of tool choice, precise sharpening and advanced tool control.

We as woodturners, all generally practice some combination of these processes during our own turning projects.  However, Matt has spent years studying the nuances of each choice and refined them, bringing his execution of each to new levels.

Exposure to Matt's methods will offer every turner the opportunity to raise their skill level in multiple ways.  We hope to see you for the demonstration and any or all of the workshop days.

About our Demonstrator:

Matt Monaco

Matt Monaco operates full-time woodturning studios within the Ozark region of the USA and offers his works to select local and worldwide clientele of both custom retail and wholesale craft industry and collectors as a full-time professional maker of traditionally turned craft.

Among his generation, Matt Monaco is the only traditional Master Woodturner in America who has (since youth) trained, apprenticed, and undertaken the initial education, countless hours of workload, and overall professional experience. He has spent the time at the lathe required to pursue, and successfully build a legitimate full-time career as a professional maker within both the wholesale tradeshow and retail makers circuit (as a sole proprietor) as well as within the high-end professional furniture trades, as in-house Production Woodturner for Shackleton Thomas Furniture & Pottery.

Matt also shares his knowledge (openly & willingly) with environments that value the importance of learning the craft in person, and with those who wish to also inspire high-quality continued education.  He recognizes that the pursuit of Mastery, is NOT the pursuit of elitism (towards faction-based woodworking/craft exclusivity) but is rather a philosophical learning principle based on an inspired degree of intent, rigor, and training.
